Writing to be cited by ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity

How to write pages that AI assistants can quote: direct answers, explicit subjects, sourced facts and a pre-publication checklist, with before-and-after examples.

“Why does the assistant cite a competitor half our size?” This question keeps coming up in marketing meetings. The answer rarely lies in company size. It often lies in one sentence: the competitor wrote, somewhere on its site, the exact answer to the question asked.

To be cited by AI, a text must first serve a busy reader. ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity write their answers from web pages, then display links to some of them. This guide focuses on the writing itself: the sentence, the paragraph, the subheading.

There is no “special AI” style, and that is good news

Let us start with what the publishers say. In its guide to optimising for generative AI, Google states that there is no need to write in a particular way for its AI features, nor to split content into tiny fragments. The same guide puts useful, original and well-organised content first.

The other answer engines do not publish their selection criteria. Nobody can therefore sell you a recipe for being cited by AI. The advice below is a writing discipline: it improves your chances because it makes each passage understandable on its own, verifiable and unambiguous. This discipline fits into your content and digital marketing strategy; it does not replace it.

The method: one question, one answer, one proof

Apply this pattern to each section of a page.

  1. Phrase the subheading as the real question a customer asks. Draw on the sales team’s emails and the support requests.
  2. Answer in the first two sentences that follow the subheading. Keep the context and nuances for later.
  3. Name the subject in each key sentence. An isolated pronoun (“it”, “this”, “this solution”) loses its meaning as soon as an engine extracts the passage.
  4. Define each technical term in one sentence, at its first appearance.
  5. Support each fact with a verifiable source: a link, a date, an organisation.
  6. End the section with what the reader should do or remember.

Four before-and-after rewrites

These examples come from typical company pages. Each one fixes a specific flaw.

The direct answer

Before: “The cost of an ERP depends on many factors that must be analysed case by case.”

After: “The cost of an ERP depends on three elements: the number of users, the modules enabled and the volume of data to migrate.” The sentence answers straight away, then announces the plan of the section.

The explicit subject

Before: “It allows you to track them in real time.”

After: “Real-time stock management allows the warehouse manager to track every item movement.” The passage keeps its full meaning when an engine isolates it from the rest of the page.

The definition

Before: “Lead scoring is a real performance lever.”

After: “Lead scoring assigns a score to each prospect based on their profile and behaviour. Sales teams therefore call the most promising contacts first.” The reader understands the term without leaving the page, and the assistant has a definition ready to reuse.

The sourced fact

Before: “Most companies already use AI.”

After: “According to [organisation], [measured share] of companies surveyed in [year] say they use AI,” with a link to the study. If you cannot find the source, delete the sentence.

Checklist before publication

  • The title states the topic and the benefit, without wordplay.
  • The introduction gives the main answer within the first hundred words.
  • Each subheading makes sense out of context.
  • Each section answers a single question.
  • Steps appear in a numbered list, criteria in a bulleted list.
  • Figures carry a unit, a date and a source.
  • The author, their role and the update date appear on the page.
  • Important text exists as plain text, not only in an image or a PDF.
  • An outsider to the topic understands each paragraph without reading the previous one.

Mistakes to avoid and limits to accept

Three drifts come up often. The first is writing for the robot: stacking artificial questions, repeating the keyword, chopping the text into disconnected sentences. The reader drops off, and nothing shows that the engines gain from it. Read the page aloud: if it sounds false, rewrite it for a human.

The second is publishing generic content, the kind that many other sites already offer. An assistant has no reason to cite your version rather than another. Bring what only you have: field feedback, a method, internal data you agree to publish.

The third is promising a result to your management. An AI answer varies with the wording, the language and the moment. A citation does not always lead to a click. Present this work as an improvement in editorial quality, of which visibility in AI answers is one possible effect.

What changes by sector

  • Private healthcare: patients ask an assistant before choosing a clinic. Pages that describe the care pathway, preparation and follow-up of a procedure, reviewed by a practitioner, limit approximate summaries.
  • Insurance: AI rephrases guarantees in everyday language. Clear definitions of exclusions, deductibles and time limits prevent it from oversimplifying.
  • Manufacturing: technical buyers ask about compatibility and standards. Sheets that answer attribute by attribute feed the comparisons the assistant draws up.

Frequently asked questions

Should we rewrite all our older articles?

No. Start with the pages that answer a commercial question: offers, pricing, comparisons, buying guides. Revise the introduction and subheadings first, as they carry most of the answer.

Is there an ideal length for an AI engine to cite a text?

No publisher states one. A text covers the question when a reader no longer needs to look elsewhere. Cut filler rather than aiming for a word count.

Does a text written with an AI assistant have fewer chances?

The production method matters less than accuracy and original input. A text that any tool produces identically adds nothing new. Have every piece reviewed by an industry expert and add your own examples and point of view.
